I Am Certified... But Are You Qualified?/Rashea@LLO2 Academy
Let's be honest. Is that the kind of person you want giving you advice? "Oh... I read up on a bunch of books on now to be a coach, but... I have no real experience coaching?"ππ€¦♀️
I get it. We all have to start somewhere in our field, but never allow someone who has a certificate unqualify your experience that qualifies you to do and to be who and what you are. I keep telling people... don't do that!
To the experienced... Be patient with those learning and gaining experience... knowing we all need to brush up on some areas of learning and skills ourselves. And to the certified... Don't get the big head. Certification looks different for every corporation, institution of learning and organization.
Yes. I have certificates of completion in my field from classes I completed too, but I don't hang them up on the wall. They are probably discarded or boxed up somewhere.π€£
Why? Well... It was years ago for the most part. Don't get me wrong. I am glad I took the 6 week classes on effective leadership but... I was more focused on completing the class and gaining the experience I needed in leadership.
Do you know how many seminars, meetings, classes and conferences I attended in my years of leadership?π Love one's to be honest... You attend those things and rarely remember most of what was said or what went on.π€£π That is the truth. Most times they are about performance and money bins that consume your money.
I have learned the best coaching is done through books or one-on-one or in small group coaching sessions with trusted and notable successful people who have years of experience not just the certificates. When you listen to or read the expertise of a leader or coach you're not thinking..."I wonder how many degrees or certificates they have?"π€£ You came to experience their wisdom and years of experience.
Really good leadership and coaches are confident yet humble. Direct with the answers & wisdom but patient with those who lack such. They are experienced yet they put themselves in environments to keep learning.
Don't keep waving your certificate in the face of people who are experienced. There is room for both. Those who have experience can take people further than those who have a certificate of completion.
Again, I read this and thought... Not again. More bad advice. Please stop.π
Sometimes being certified gets you more pay, but if you lack experience, how can you actually lead your team effectively? You cannot. Head knowledge is not always suffice to resolve challenges. Experience is!
Head knowledge says, "This is what the book says works to resolve challenges." Experience says, "Let's try a new way, because every challenge is different." Makes sense.
God has a way of blessing and promoting those with experience, too. "Your gift will make room for you and bring you before prominent people." Let's read it this way... "Your experience will make room for you and bring you before prominent people."
So... You are having a challenge and you need immediate resolve. Are you going to go to the person with the certificate but no experience or a lack of experience for help, or are you going to entrust your challenges to someone who has notable experience to resolve challenges? Y'all stay humble about these degrees and certificates. It is sometimes nothing more than egotistical leverage to hide one's own insecurities and inabilities.
