What the Apostle John is revealing is the spirit of idolatry. He is warning us to steer clear of idolatry and its ability to consume us with the desires to have more at any costs. Idolatry is carnality, secularism, worldliness, idol worship or the proclivity to exalt the flesh or creation above the existence of God. God wants us to be prosperous and to be successful (Joshua 1:8), but He does not want us to crave these things to the point of harming ourselves or others or defrauding or deceiving others and abandoning our relationship with God to get these things. When we do violate these boundaries it becomes idolatry.
